Seaside Holidays

Kountoura Village

Kountoura is a peaceful seaside village in southwest Crete, located about 7 km west of Palaiochora. Unlike the island’s larger resorts, Kountoura offers a relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches, traditional Cretan hospitality, and easy access to some of Crete’s most spectacular natural attractions. Its combination of traditional village character, scenic coastline, and proximity to some of Crete’s finest beaches makes Kountoura one of the hidden gems of southwest Crete.

The village is one of the most important greenhouse-farming regions in Crete. Large greenhouse complexes produce vegetables including: Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Peppers and Eggplants. These products are distributed throughout Crete and mainland Greece. The local agricultural cooperative is considered one of the island’s most active.

Top Things to Do

1. Relax at Krios Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches in southwest Crete, Krios offers clear turquoise water, several coves, and access to hiking trails. It’s also the starting point for part of the E4 European long-distance trail.

2. Spend a Day at Paralia Grammenou

Grammeno is famous for its golden sand, crystal-clear water, and cedar-covered peninsula. The beach offers both sandy and pebble sections, making it suitable for families and swimmers alike.

3. Walk the E4 Coastal Trail

The E4 trail passes through the area and provides spectacular views of the Libyan Sea. Short walks from Krios lead toward remote coves and archaeological sites, while longer hikes continue toward Kedrodasos and Elafonissi.

4. Visit Nearby Palaiochora

Just a few minutes away by car, Palaiochora is a charming seaside town with waterfront tavernas, shops, and beaches. In the evening, many visitors enjoy strolling along the pedestrianized seafront. Community travelers frequently recommend it as a relaxed base for exploring southern Crete.

5. Explore Castel Selino

This Venetian fortress overlooking Palaiochora offers panoramic views of the coast and a glimpse into the region’s history.

6. Go Camping by the Sea

Grammeno Camping is located directly beside the beach and is popular with travelers who want easy access to swimming, snorkeling, and coastal walks.

7. Swim in Hidden Coves

The coastline between Grammeno and Krios contains numerous small coves and pebble beaches that are often much quieter than the main beaches. These are ideal for snorkeling and enjoying the clear waters of the Libyan Sea.
